Politics
King Mswati II is the ruler of the Kingdom of Swaziland. Swaziland is the only country in southern Africa with a reigning monarchy very much actively in control of the governance of the country. The traditional tribal assembly, the Liqoqo helps the crown prince in governing the country. The 70 member bicameral parliament is essentially an advisory body and consists of two houses, the Senate and the Lower House or House of Assembly. There is little or no concept of plural democracy as political parties are banned under the Constitution of 1978. An electoral college composed of representatives of the different constituencies elects members to the assembly. 50 members are elected, 20 are appointed by the king. |
